How Much Time Do You Really Need a Wedding Photographer?

Your wedding day goes incredibly quickly.

One minute you're getting ready, and the next you're wondering where the last eight hours disappeared to.

One of the questions we hear regularly is:

“How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?”

The answer isn't the same for every couple. It depends on the size of your wedding, your plans for the day, how much of the story you want photographed and, importantly, how much time you want to spend with your photographer.

The good news is that you don't necessarily need your photographer there from the moment you wake up until the last person leaves the dance floor.

What you do need is enough time to tell the story of your wedding day properly.

Start With What You Want Photographed

Before worrying about hours, think about the parts of your wedding that you want to remember.

Do you want photographs of:

  • Getting ready?
  • Your dress, rings and other details?
  • Family and friends arriving?
  • The ceremony?
  • Your first moments together as a married couple?
  • Family photographs?
  • Romantic photographs of the two of you?
  • The reception?
  • Speeches?
  • Cutting the cake?
  • Your first dance?
  • Dancing and celebrations afterwards?

The more of these moments you want covered, the more photography time you'll need.

4 Hours: A Shorter Wedding Coverage

A shorter photography package can work beautifully for a small, simple wedding.

It might cover:

Ceremony → family photographs → couple's portraits

This can be ideal for an intimate wedding where everything is happening at the same location.

The important thing is to understand that shorter coverage means making choices.

There simply isn't enough time to photograph everything.

For couples having a small wedding, that may be perfectly fine.

6 Hours: A Great Balance

Around six hours can provide a very good balance for many weddings.

Ceremony → family photographs → couple's portraits → early reception

It can allow your photographer to capture some of the preparation, the ceremony, formal photographs, portraits and a  portion of your reception.

It gives the day room to breathe without necessarily paying for hours you don't need.

8 Hours: More of Your Story

With eight hours, there's considerably more flexibility.

Your photographer can arrive earlier, spend more time photographing the preparations and stay further into your reception.

This becomes particularly valuable when the wedding ceremony and reception are at different locations.

It also means there is less pressure to rush your portraits.

And that matters.

Some of the best wedding photographs happen when you have a little time to simply relax, breathe and enjoy being together.

10–12 Hours: The Full Story

Longer coverage allows your photographer to document almost the entire journey.

From the nervous excitement of getting ready through to the celebrations on the dance floor.

It means we can capture things you may not even realise are happening.

The nervous moments.

The laughs with your bridal party.

Parents watching from the sidelines.

Friends hugging.

A quiet moment between you and your dad.

The atmosphere building before the ceremony.

The crazy dance floor later in the evening.

These aren't necessarily the photographs you plan.

They're the photographs that tell the story.

So How Many Hours Do You Need?

There isn't one correct answer.

A small ceremony and intimate celebration might need only a few hours.

A larger wedding with preparations, multiple locations and a reception could easily benefit from eight, ten or twelve hours.

The best question isn't:

“How many hours can we afford?”

It's:

“What parts of our wedding do we want to remember?”

Then work backwards from there.

Your Wedding, Your Way

At All Saints Photography, we don't believe every wedding needs the same photography package.

Your wedding isn't a template.

Some couples want the complete story. Others want the important moments covered beautifully and simply.

Our job is to help you work out what makes sense for  your day, rather than trying to convince you to buy hours you don't need.

Because ultimately, it's your wedding.

Your people. Your story. Your way.
